SHAMROCK PET FOUNDATION ARROW FUND HELPS ANOTHER ANIMAL!!!

Pee-A-Boo and gunshot wound On March 12th the Shamrock Arrow Fund saved another dog (from Pike County) who had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

This baby has been named Peek-A-Boo because she kept hiding her face in her rescuer's armpit and then would look up to see if she was okay. The two of them played peek-a-boo on the way home! Hence, her name!

Peek-A-Boo is now at the vet. She has one entrance and one exit wound above her paw - very sore. Around her elbow the lead is still in her and her elbow area is very swollen compared to the other side. She is BEYOND SWEET!!! Rescuers got lots of kisses! We will be looking for a perfect home for Peek-A-Boo!

A special thanks to Bob Richardson who helped rescuers and is assisting with the Arrow Fund Team. Another special thanks to Dr. Goranflo, he and his staff are fabulous!!!

3/14/2010 UPDATE ON PEEK-A-BOO:

She has the one injury in her wrist. It has an entrance and exit wound where the bullet left the body. After additional x-rays, Dr. Goranflo found that the bullet around her elbow was embedded in the joint. He performed surgery and removed the 22 calibur bullet. There was also a bone chip floating - he got that out. She is recovering. She was loaded with hookworm. She is heart worm negative! She is not well enough to Spay yet.

MEET AIDEN!!
Aiden, a Black Lab, was rescued from Pike County with a severe arrow wound
Newly named, a Black Lab was rescued from Pike County with a severe arrow wound that traveled through his body. Shamrock has rescued this handsome fellow and he is safe and is under medical care with one of our veterinarians who so graciously opened his door and heart to help this guy.

Shamrock had developed a special fund for his care and for the care of other animals who have suffered from abuse. Please help Aiden! For more information about his story, please go to WAVE3.com. If you would like to donate to his care, please make a donation to the Arrow Fund through our PayPal account or send to Shamrock Pet Foundation, P. O. Box 24033, Louisville, KY 40224-0033 and make a notation that it is for the Arrow Fund.
Thank you for caring.

We must work together to educate people and change attitudes.

UPDATE - 01/18/ 2010Aiden's Welcome Home Cake

Aiden came home on Tuesday afternoon, 1/12/10. He met his new brother Cosmo, and human brothers Trent and Alec. He was greeted with a cake, lots of tail wagging, and a good game of chase. Aiden still has drains out of both sides where the arrow entered and exited. Both sides are tightly stitched by legendary vet, Dr. Goranflo. It was reported that drain tubes were removed, however they are still in place and if all goes well will be removed Friday 1/22.

Aiden is finding his way around the home and clearly enjoys his meals. 2 cups in the a.m. and 2 cups in the p.m. which takes him about 0.3 seconds to devour. He and Cosmo love one another and get along great. Aiden has been for 2 walks in the neighborhood and displays great intelligence and stays by our side. He loves to lick and eat your face showing his affection for everyone and everything. He is still not sleeping through the night. At 2 a.m., we are awaken by licks in the face and little love nips on our arms. The stuffed squirrel is a great chew mate (not sure the stuffed squirrel ever gets to chew back) and Aiden actually makes little grunts while moving about the yard smelling his new areas.

He is the miracle man and enjoying his life to the fullest. He is truly a blessing!

UPDATE - 01/13/ 2010:

Aiden went home yesterday with his new family. Aiden was adopted by a local family who immediately contacted us when the news of his plight was announced. Shamrock received numerous applications from across the state and country. The decision was made early to adopt Aiden locally. All other applications were considered. The application that was approved was scrutinized closely and the adoption committee was in full agreement with the decision. Aiden's new family consist of a couple with two teenage boys. Everybody was ecstatic when they learned the news that they had been approved.

Aiden's health is continuing to improve and the drainage tubes are gone. We will continue to give updates.

Many thanks to all who have called, sent emails, offered to adopt him and made donations towards his care. On his behalf, there are no words to express our and his appreciation!!! As I have said many times, the work ahead is demanding and we must continue to educate people and change attitudes and strive to make this a kinder and gentler world.

Humanely Yours,
Sharon Mayes
President

UPDATE - 01/09/ 2010:

Aiden has a good appetite now, temperature is normal and continues to be on antibiotics. From his date of arrival to today, Aiden, is looking so much better and so good. His coat is no longer dull but very shiny and healthy. Shamrock volunteers took Aiden's new dad and mom to visit with him today. Aiden should be able to go to his new home early to mid week. Aiden had a wonderful day today and is a very happy boy. His future is extremely bright and he is such a lucky, lucky fellow. Many thanks to all!!

UPDATE - 01/08/ 2010:

Aiden had surgery Friday morning. Dr. Goranflo removed a little more debris from the arrow and three inches of  dead tissue.  He has two drainage tubes in the entrance wound and the exit wound was left open to drain. He is still on antibiotics and his temperature is in the high normal range. As Aiden was waking up, Dr. Goranflo was adjusting the tubes. Aiden slowly raised he head just a little and ever so gently licked his doctor on the nose.

Aiden is recovering well

UPDATE - 01/07/ 2010:

Aiden is better!!! His temperature in down to 101.9. Also, big news, he ate on his own today devouring 2 full cups of dry food. Aiden is feeling better and will undergo surgery tomorrow to ensure that all the debris has been removed from his wound.

Again, we appreciate all the calls and emails regarding Aiden. We have received calls from all over the United States and much appreciation to those who have made donations for Aiden's medical care.

The special fund, the Arrow Fund, was developed to aid animals that Shamrock rescues who have been harmed, abused and injured by human action. This fund will be used for the medical care they will need, in order. to recuperate and heal from their abuse. Many thanks to all.

We all must work together to end animal abuse!!!

UPDATE - 01/06/ 2010:

Today Aiden's temperature is 102.1 which is a little down from yesterday. Dr. Goranflo had to cleanse his wound again today and was able to remove another piece of the arrow, this piece was 2 inches long. He would prefer to sedate him and do surgery to completely check the entire wound and remove any other debris but he can't at this point. Aiden has a plus 4 level hookworm infection and has a low blood count of 24. The normal blood count should be 36 to 60. He is still on the 3 antibiotics to fight the infection.

Good News... Aiden is eating now but only if Dr. Goranflo hand feeds him. This he does with much patience and caring.

Many thanks to everybody who has called asking about Aiden. We will continue to post updates regarding his recovery.

UPDATE - 01/05/ 2010:

Aiden's temperature was escalating today even with the antibiotics that had been prescribed. The veterinarian decided to do a complete flush of the wound and found a one inch piece of a carbon fiber arrow filled with bacteria. Cultures were taken from deep inside the wound and we are waiting for the results. At present, Aiden is on three different antibiotics to assist in fighting this infection.

Aiden's one collapsed lung appears to be re-inflating and he does have a hole in is scapula. This dog is amazing. He is so appreciative, wags his tail when approached and even during his exams and treatments and constantly licking your hand. He knows everyone is working so hard to help him and he shows it.

Many thanks to all who have been calling and to those who are so graciously sending donations for his care and to the Arrow Fund. The Arrow Fund will be set aside for those animals who have been victims of abuse and need medical care.

Also, we have received many inquiries regarding the adoption of Aiden. Please be assured that he will get the best home ever. We will be placing him locally in the Louisville area. We really appreciate all those, from around the country, who have offered to give him a good home.

Many thanks for caring.
